Characterization: Born Worker

Everyone in the story knows that Jose is hardworking from the day he was born, His physical appearance was one of the reasons. In the story it states, “...His palms were already rough by the time he was three…”, “He wore jeans, a shirt, with sleeves rolled to his elbows…”, “His eyes could measure a length of a board, and his knees genuflected…”. This image of him shows that , he was always been working since he was young, it's like he was put into working at a young age so that was how he was naturally.He was born into a working industry so he looks like he has been working for years at a young age because he didn't get to experience life as a kid.

Most of Jose’s thought in the story are about how he doesn't like arnie. “He thought he was lazy and, worse, spoiled by the trap of being middle class”. This shows that jose is judgmental, he doesn't think highly of his cousin. This is jose’s mindset so he believed people that don't slave away don't deserve what they get.

Jose is a very caring person. “You punk!” Jose yelled. “Go inside and call 911”. This shows that jose cares about the old man. It shows he is caring because he doesn't leave the old man being, injured. Arnie is opposite of J

ose he is scared they are going to blame him so he runs like a coward.
